Dear Lorton Station Elementary School Staff, Parents and Community:

It gives me great pleasure to announce that Francis Legagneur, Ed.D. has been appointed as principal of Lorton Station Elementary School (ES), effective Monday, February 1, 2022.  Dr. Legagneur has over 22 years of experience as an educator.  He is currently the principal at Alice West Fleet ES, Arlington Public Schools (APS) where he has served for the past two and a half years.  Prior to his time at Alice West Fleet ES, Dr. Legagneur served as an assistant principal at Tuckahoe ES, APS from 2015-2019 and Wakefield High School, APS from 2011-2015. Dr. Legagneur is a strong leader who is experienced leading a diverse school community, while building strong relationships with all stakeholders through transparency and openness. He has extensive experience teaching and leading at the elementary and secondary levels, working in high poverty/high performing schools, designing and leading programming that addresses subgroup performance, fostering the effective functioning of collaborative teams and initiating meaningful outreach to partner with families.

Dr. Legagneur opened the APS flagship school, Alice West Fleet Elementary School, as its new principal in 2019.   During his tenure, he developed a vision and mission focused on sustainability, equity, and academics.  Fleet earned the 2021 LEEDS Gold School and 2021 Green School Awards for its focus on science, technology, and green initiatives.  He built a sense of community in a brand-new school and ensured that the positive climate and integrity of the instructional program was maintained during the COVID 19 pandemic.  Dr. Legagneur implemented a tiered system of support for students and clearly defined the new school’s framework for data analysis, instructional planning, goal setting, and interventions.

Dr. Legagneur is a leader with an inclusive approach to decision making. He includes staff and student voice in creating school structures and expectations.  During the pandemic, Dr. Legagneur created the Fleet Community Cohort Initiative which fostered a communal support system for staff designed to keep teams connected, alleviate feelings of isolation, and maintain focus on teaching and learning.  He worked closely with the school PTA to support families with their return to in-person school.
