A Day in the Life of a Kindergartener at LSES!
Kindergarten is an important time in a student's life. At Lorton Station, students in kindergarten spend their days exploring the world around them through engaging in social play as well as academic engagement. A day in the life of a kindergartener, while busy, is full of fun and wonder!

Every morning after arrival, students in kindergarten start their day with a class Morning Meeting. This is a time for the class to connect, share, and celebrate. A typical Morning Meeting includes the viewing of our school-wide morning news show, a classroom greeting, songs, or movement based activities.
After Morning Meeting, students then move onto their content blocks which include mathematics, language arts, science, and social studies. In mathematics, kindergarteners are introduced to basic mathematical concepts. They learn to count and recognize numbers, explore simple addition and subtraction, identify shapes and patterns, and gain an understanding of measurement and time. They also begin to engage with data collection and graphing.
Language arts instruction in kindergarten focuses on building foundational literacy skills. Students learn letter recognition and phonics, develop an understanding of the relationship between spoken and written words, and begin to develop early reading comprehension and writing skills.

Breaks to play and socialize throughout the day are very important for kindergarteners. Students receive 30 minutes for recess each day to play on our school playground (weather permitting). They also receive 30 minutes for lunch. Students have the option to either bring a lunch from home or purchase a lunch from our cafeteria. Want to know what's for lunch today? Families can view the lunch menu on the FCPS Food and Nutrition Services website.

Specials time is a favorite of our kindergarteners! In addition to core subjects, kindergarten students at Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) also enjoy a variety of "specials" classes throughout the week. These include art, music, physical education, and library. These classes provide opportunities for students to explore their creativity, express themselves through movement and music, develop a love of reading, and learn about different cultures and communities.
Overall, a day in the life of a kindergartener at Lorton Station Elementary School is a busy, exciting, and rewarding experience for both students and teachers. By providing a balance of structured learning activities and free play time, our teachers and staff help young learners develop a love of learning and a sense of independence that will last through the rest of their time at Lorton Station...and beyond!
